Learn, Unlearn and Re-learn

"Teachers ought to learn, unlearn and re-learn."

One of the reasons frequently cited by teachers why they have chosen to stay in the service for many years is the dynamic and exciting nature of the classroom. Each day is a tabula rasa, the class is a blank new slate with surprises and shocks that awaits the teacher.

If we open our minds, we will learn something new everyday, be it from our colleagues or from our students. In the process of a new discovery, there is bound to be prior knowledge that has become obsolete, outdated or been proven wrong that it has to be un-learned. In this way, we re-learn and this new knowledge becomes embedded in our minds and it will likely influence how we carry ourselves and probably also the way we treat other students.
